Midnight Aura!!!

We are familiar with the word 'Highlight'. It is used to bring any area forward and create lightness. Similarly there is a less used word and technique called 'Lowlight' where a darker color is used underneath to change and modify the effects of other colors put on it.

With a black underneath, the shadows take a mysterious turn and give an effect of an aurora when bright colors are applied. This look is inspired from John Galliano's Runways and is a very bold look mostly fit for the magazines or for people who could dare to sport it.

I have used Urban Decay's 15th Anniversary Palette to create this look because they have the perfect color in terms of highlighting and lowlighting with perfect undertones to enhance each color. This EOTD looks like fireworks burst in midnight or a midnight aurora.

With these inspirations and interplay of light, lets see how to do this makeup......

From the Urban Decay 15th Anniversary palette I used the following colors -

1. Midnight 15 - Oyster pearl with Silver Glitter
2. Evidence - Deep Metallic Blue
3. Deep End - Bright Teal Shimmer
4. Omen - Shimmery metallic bright purple with a blue shift
5. Tainted - Gold based lilac
6. Junkshow - Bright pink with fuchsia shift
7. Blackout - Darkest saturated midnight pitch black

Conceal and brighten up the eyes.

Prime the lids with Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer. Also tame the brows so that they can be shaped and reshaped as needed.

Apply Bourjois Khol and Contour 16 hour eye pencil haphazardly on the outer and inner corners and also the lash line. Trace the lower lash line and inner rims of lower lids too.

Blend it to nothingness with a soft pencil dome brush. I also used MAC 217 to diffuse the color upto the brow bone and create a gradation.

Apply MAC Paint Pot in Blackground on the shaded areas to add depth and dimension. It looks a bit messy now but goes better as the look pulls together.

With MAC 217 and Urban Decay's Blackout eyeshadow, apply the color on all the darkened areas of the eyes and also in the crease to create a shape like the one shown in the picture. The shape is also referred to as  Biba eyes.

Apply Illamasqua eyeshadow in Burst to add some color in the crease. This adds a hue to the achromatic color scheme.

Highlight as shown with Urban Decay eyeshadow in Midnight 15. The color isn't so dark and has been modified due to the low lying black underneath.

Apply UD Evidence in the centre of the upper and lower lids. Its midnight blue sheen is good enough to create a layer of low light.

Apply Deep End eyeshadow over Evidence and see how different it looks. This eyeshadow is applied by dusting on 2-3 layers instead of one bold application.

Apply UD  Tainted eyeshadow in the inner corners to brighten them up.

Apply Junkshow eyeshadow on the middle and inner part of the brow bone. 

Apply Omen eyeshadow in the inner part of the upper lid to degrade into Tainted.

Comb brows upwards to create boy-brows. Curl lashes and apply 2-3 coats of Clinique High Impact Mascara in Black.

To add a punk like effect, I swept Junkshow eyeshadow as blush on the cheeks and highlighted with a soft pink champagne shimmer. For the lips, one could go with a bold Fuchsia like MAC Girl About Town or Clinique Spanish Rose or just go with a nice sheer pink shimmery gloss for a modern touch.
